Liede, an 800-year-old village, is receiving a facelift. On
August 23, the Liede renovation project, the first urban
village renovation project in Guangzhou, officially
commenced. After a hiatus of two years, Liede's western area
is back on the way to becoming the largest integrated
commercial project in Zhujiang New Town.
The Guangzhou Municipal Government has announced that
Yangji, Xiancun and Xintang Villages will complete their
renovation by June next year, and that all of the city's 138
urban villages will be renovated in 10 years.
So far, more than ten high-rise residential buildings funded
by local villagers have emerged in the areas east of the
Liede Creek and will be ready for occupation next year. The
integrated CBD flagship project west of the Liede Creek, a
collaborative project among three developers, is expected to
launch its first batch of apartments next year before the
Asian Games open.
The Liede project covers an area of 114,000 square meters,
with a floor area of 568,000 square meters. With an
investment of RMB 10 billion, the project is the largest and
most expensive commercial property ever auctioned in
Zhujiang New Town. It is intended as an integrated CBD
complex project with a five-star hotel, luxury service
apartment buildings, a shopping mall, and grade-A office
buildings.
According to industry insiders, Zhujiang New Town is the
third major CBD approved by the State Council after similar
ones in Beijing's Chaoyang District and Shanghai's Pudong
District. The Liede West Area Project lies in a prime
waterfront location in Zhujjiang New Town and is expected to
boost the town's status as Guangzhou's central financial
district upon completion.
